Clergy: Monk or Nun
As a monk or nun, you sometimes need to deal with the unpleasant. As a member of the clergy (or church), you will need to study the Black Death in order to warn your Church members about its dangers.
Studying the Plague is not easy. The history of the Plague is very sad, a often rather disgusting! But, if you want to move up in society AND help your Church members stay alive (or at least go to heaven), you will need to complete ONE the following activities:
Your calling as a monk or nun:
1) Explore the websites below and quotes about the Plague.
2) Either create a Power Point explaining the Plague to your Church members and warning them about its symptoms and history OR create a comic strip which shows and tells how the Plague was spread to Europe. Follow the guidelines for each project below.
When you are done:
1) Flip Your Cup so the High Queen can come over and give you a stamp.
2) Move on to the Royalty assignment!

POWER POINT ASSIGNMENT:
Create a 3 slide Power Point to warn your Church members about the Plague which is killing so many people in Medieval Europe. DO NOT change the font or the slide background. After all, if you waste time, your Church members might catch the Plague and die!
Follow these guidelines:
Read a description of the affect of the Plague in Medieval Europe: http://themiddleages.net/life/blackdeath.html OR Read about the Bubonic Plague on http://www.historyforkids.org/learn/science/medicine/plague.htm.
Explore this gruesome website about the Plague: http://www.insecta-inspecta.com/fleas/bdeath/bdeath.html
Read this quote about the plague from someone who was there! (It's a primary source!)
"How many valiant men, how many fair ladies, breakfast with their kinfolk and the same night supped with their ancestors in the next world! The condition of the people was pitiable to behold. They sickened by the thousands daily, and died unattended and without help. Many died in the open street, others dying in their houses, made it known by the stench of their rotting bodies. Consecrated churchyards did not suffice for the burial of the vast multitude of bodies, which were heaped by the hundreds in vast trenches, like goods in a ships hold and covered with a little earth." -Giovanni Boccaccio
1st Slide: Explain what the Plague was and how it affected people in Europe.
2nd Slide: Symptoms of the Plague: Write a list of common symptoms associated with the Bubonic Plague and search the internet for at least one appropriate picture of these symptoms. I know it will be hard to look at, but think about how much worse it would be if your fellow vassals got the disease!
3rd Slide: Research how the Plague got to Europe. On the slide, explain how the Bubonic Plague got to Europe and include a picture of a map that shows where the Plague was from and a picture of the animal that carried it.
Save your Power Point slide in Ms. Landy's Drop Box as Homeroom.LastNameFirstInitial.Plague.pptx. (604.LandyT.Plague.pptx)
